This post is dedicated to sharing more about how the Tilly process works. It’s quite different from the typical landscape design process – but that’s what we are all about!

In an age where you can order groceries for delivery with the click of a button, arrange on demand beauty services, watch TV dozens of different ways (does that confuse anyone else? Hulu, Amazon, Netflix, Cable…), redesign a room digitally – our co-founders wondered why landscape design was stuck in the dark ages?

Being on the old end of millenials the Tilly co-founders were accustomed to a digital, streamlined life. With a combination of everyday communication apps, landscape software, Google Earth, and an amazing design team – they realized online design was not only possible, but often preferred.

The Tilly process is efficient, environmentally responsible (no driving to meetings, no paper trail), on the customer’s schedule, and much more.

Here is some additional insight into the process:

STEP 1: INTAKE SURVEY

Getting started with Tilly is super simple! Select and purchase a design package to meet your needs. If you aren’t sure which package is right for you, you can fill out a basic form (here) which helps us get a feel for your project and recommend the best package to meet your needs. If you have specific questions about your project, you can schedule a call with a designer or email alexis@tilly-design.com and she can help figure out which option is best for you. Purchase your package and congrats – you’re moving on to step 2!

STEP 2: SPACE ASSESSMENT

Now it’s time to move on to the Space Assessment, which you will receive in a welcome email after your purchase. This is a much deeper dig into your project where we ask about your sunlight, soil, functional use, pests, design elements, favorite plants, must have colors, etc. As part of this step we will also collect photos of your space and a property survey for any package that includes scaled plans. If you aren’t sure about your answers to some of the above questions – that’s okay!

STEP 3: PERSONAL CONSULT

This is where you virtually meet with your designer one-on-one by video chat!  You can give them a tour of your yard, show them views from inside your home, discuss your plans around budget and installation, and feel free to ask anything else related to your landscape. Our designers are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They have worked with everyone from first time homeowners to master gardeners and are prepared to do whatever amount of hand-holding feels right for you!

STEP 4: PLAN DELIVERY

Soon after the consult, your designer will deliver your plan. This will arrive via email as a pdf document that you can either share with your landscaper for installation, or take to the nursery and start planting yourself. Its contents will depend on the package you select, but you can find a sample on our website here, below the package descriptions.

STEP 5: INSTALL WITH CONFIDENCE

Whether you’re planning to install yourself or looking to hire a professional, Tilly prepares you with everything you need to DIG IN!  For the DIY crowd, you receive a detailed shopping list to take to your local garden center and instructions along with some tips and tricks for a successful installation. For those looking to hire, we can answer questions about hiring a team or tell you more about our installation services in New York.

Feel free to comment with any additional questions!

Some designs by the Tilly team:

We have found the Tilly process to be most successful on properties less than an acre.

A major part of remote design is understanding a property’s existing conditions and limitations. To do this we generally use the primary structure (usually the house) as the main point of reference. The greater distances are from from the house the less successful we are at understanding your property. No matter what the size of your property, the more information you can provide us, the better. Don’t be shy with the pictures! And please send along any and all architectural or property plan documents you can.
